Introduced in 1977, Opium, by Yves Saint Laurent, caused quite a stir when it was launched. Not only was the spicy oriental fragrance unabashedly rich, sensual and provocative, but the name evoked visions of "forbidden fruit" and addictive substances. More than likely, this was exactly what Saint Laurent had in mind, for his fragrance was an immediate success, and has remained a steady seller for over 20 years. Created by Roure perfumers Jean Amic and Jean-Louis Sieuzac, Opium is a bewitching and captivating blend of spicy, fruity notes, sweet, exotic florals, and smoldering woods. Opium won a FiFi for best fragrance of the year in 1978, and is said to be a favorite of Jerry Hall. |
Opium is an oriental fragrance.

Opium's bottle design, by none other than Pierre Dinand, is a glass vial enclosed in a red plastic container. The design was inspired by Japanese inros, a small lacquered box that held aromatic herbs, perfumes and medicines, and was worn under the kimono on a silken cord.
