Introduced in 1989, Samsara, by Jean-Paul Guerlain (grandson of Jacque), is a tantalizing, seductive fragrance that was eleven years in the making. This oriental woody-floral is warm and beguiling, in a beautiful bottle (by Robert Granai) with graceful upturned edges reminiscent of the pagodas that dot the emerald hills of Taiwan or Japan. The word Samsara is Sanskrit for an infinite cycle of births and rebirths, repeated until perfection or nirvana is attained: Guerlain acheived perfume perfection in this unbelievably rich and exotic fragrance, created as a tribute to the woman he loves. (It is said he still mixes a special version by hand just for her). Samsara is unique in that it is created almost entirely of natural ingredients from around the world, including essences often used in aromatherapy to impart a sense of serenity. |
